Awards & Achievements

In our pursuit for continuous benchmarking to world’s best practices, Sembawang Shipyard obtained the following internationally recognized and accredited awards and certification in the following key areas :

Health, Safety & Environment

  • Achieved Level 9 Rating in Det Norske Veritas’ International Rating System in March 2004. We have successfully maintained Level 8 Rating since 1994.


  • First shipyard in South East Asia to achieve ISO 14001 Environmental System award by Det Norske Veritas Ltd in July 2002. We were re-certified to ISO 14001 : 2004 edition in March 2005.


  • Achieved Singapore Health Award 2002 (Bronze), 2003 (Silver), 2004 (Silver) and 2006 (Gold) by Ministry of Health’s Health Promotion Board.


  • Successfully accredited to OHSAS 18001 : 1999 by Det Norske Veritas Certification Ltd in June 2005. We were re-certified to OHSAS 18001: 1999 in March 2006.


  • Awarded BP CEO's HSE Partner Award in February 2007

Quality

  • Certified to ISO 9001 standards since August 1996 by Lloyds Register


  • Successfully re-certified to ISO 9001 : 2000 by Det Norske Veritas Certification Ltd in March 2005.


  • Achieved Level 9 Rating in International Quality Rating System for business excellence by Det Norske Veritas in March 2004.


  • Achieved Singapore Quality Class conferred by Productivity and Standard’s Board since 1997.



Security

  • First major shipyard in Singapore to be presented with the Provisional Statement of Compliance of a Port Facility for meeting the IMO’s International Code for the Security of Ship and Port Facilities (the “ISPS” Code) at its facility located in Sembawang on 27 February 2004.

People Development

  • Recipient of the 1996 and 2000 National Training Award conferred by the Singapore Productivity and Standards Board, the first for a Singapore shipyard.
   
  Mr Heng Chiang Gnee, Chairman receiving the award from Mr Yeo Cheow Tong, Minister of Trade and Industry. We won the award again in 2000.  

Technical Expertise / Innovation

  • Signed evergreen alliances with Shell International Trading and Shipping Company (UK), BP Shipping (UK), BHP Billiton (Australia), Jo Tankers (Norway). Long term agreements with Alaska Tanker Company (USA), ASP Shipmanagement Group (UK), ConocoPhillips Inc. (USA), Euronav Ship Management SAS (Belgium), EMS Ship Management (formerly TESMA), Exmar Shipmanagement N.V. (Belgium), North West Shelf Shipping Service Company (Australia), TMT Ltd (Taiwan) and V. Ships Group (Monaco), all of which are internationally renowned shipping companies.


  • 1st shipyard to undertake RTA84TB Sulzer main engine bedplate renewal on a series of 8 Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs) in a record time of 55 days.


  • Launched world’s first shiprepair Alliance e-Collaboration portal in September 2002; web-based application to facilitate ship refits with alliance partners. This portal was awarded the Singapore National Infocomm Award 2004 for most innovative use of IT for businesses.

  • Awarded Gold Medal at the National Safety Innovation Team Competition by Ministry of Manpower for innovative project “Safe T-guide for pneumatic winches” in September 2003.

  • Awarded Gold Medal at the National Safety Innovation Team Competition by the Ministry of Manpower for designing an innovative tool ‘Cable Strip-T-Ease’, which allows workers to strip electrical cables without the risk of finger injury.
   
  We successfully patented this new invention in 2004 (application No. 200207163-7)  
  • Won the Cheng Fook Choon Productivity Award (Silver) by Singapore Technologies in 2002 for our innovative technical methodology for RTA84TB Sulzer main engine bedplate renewals on a series of VLCCs
   
  Final adjustment being made before the bedplate is repositioned in the main engine compartment  
  • Won 2 gold awards at the ASMI Innovation for Occupational Safety & Health Teams competition for designing two innovative projects “Safe turning device to perform qualitative and productive repairs on accommodation ladders’ and “Effective cables and hose management”.
     
  • Awarded the SCDF Strategic Partners Award from Singapore Civil Defence Force at its 25th Anniversary Dinner. The award was for working closely with them and contributed much to the success of SCDF.


  • Awarded “Partners in Cruise Services” in November 2001 by PSA Corporation Limited at the Singapore Cruise Centre’s 10th Anniversary Celebrations, in recognition of our world-class reputation for cruise ship repairs and services to international cruise ships and our contribution towards the development of Singapore and Southeast Asia’s cruise industry.
